ACS Co-Sponsored K08/K23 NIH Supplement Awards

The American College of Surgeons announces a program that will provide supplemental funding to up to five individuals who receive a Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08/K23).  It is directed at surgeon-scientists working in the early stages of their research careers.  The award requires co-sponsorship with an approved surgical society of a three, four or five year period of supervised research experience that may integrate didactic studies with laboratory or clinically based research.

This award program will offer a means to facilitate the career development of individuals pursuing careers in surgical research by enhancing salary support over and above that offered by the K08/K23 mechanism.  The application deadline is 12 June 2008, with funding to begin 1 July 2009.  Awardees must be members in good standing of both the College and a co-sponsoring surgical society. Participating surgical societies include American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), American Head and Neck Society (AHNS), American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), American Vascular Association (AVA), Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO), Society of University Surgeons (SUS), and Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE).

Applications are made to this program by submitting a duplicate of the complete NIH application to the ACS Scholarships Administrator by the 12 June 2008 deadline. Applicants must advise the ACS Scholarships Administrator of the NIH’s decision regarding their application.

For further details, please contact the ACS Scholarships Administrator at kearly@facs.org.
