COURSE DESCRIPTION
This six-day intensive course is designed to provide surgeons with knowledge and skills to enhance their abilities as teachers and administrators of surgical education programs.
The course emphasizes the needs of adult learners and the techniques necessary to develop an effective learning environment for medical students, surgical residents, colleagues, and others in the health profession. The class size of 30 allows highly interactive sessions.
The course will address four key topics:
Teaching Skills
Participants will broaden their understanding of various teaching methods and technologies and enhance the application of these methods to maximize learning.
Curriculum Development
Participants will plan and document an instructional unit (for example, clerkship or residency rotation), using an organized instructional design framework.
Educational Administration and Leadership
This section will focus on applying leadership and management skills in the administration of an educational program with quality education, faculty ownership, personal career development, and faculty development.
Performance and Program Evaluation
Participants will learn how to develop a sound system for assessing the performance of learners and teachers and the efficacy of curricula at the undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education levels.

INTENDED PARTICIPANTS
The course is intended for full-time faculty members who are interested in acquiring or honing skills in curriculum development, teaching, performance and program evaluation, and program administration, and who have direct teaching responsibilities for medical students or residents.
Participants are expected to free themselves from all work obligations during the course. The intensive nature of the program requires that evenings be kept free for preparation and other course activities. Participants are strongly discouraged from bringing family members to Durham.
COURSE SETTING
The course will be held at the R. David Thomas Executive Conference Center, One Science Drive, Durham, NC. Designed expressly for executive education, the Thomas Center is a full-service residential conference center located on Duke University’s West Campus. This extraordinary conference center combines state-of-the-art technology, a beautiful setting, and contemporary, world-class guest accommodations. COURSE FEE
The course fee includes tuition and all course materials, including course syllabus and instructional books authored by well-known writers on the subjects of education and training techniques; six nights of deluxe lodging at the R. David Thomas Executive Conference Center; a welcome reception on Saturday evening; culinary delights served daily in the main dining room for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; snacks during morning and afternoon breaks; and a special off-site group outing on Thursday evening.
